The shamrock (from the Latin trifolium) appears in both pagan and Christian symbolism. The shamrock motif was popular in Gothic architecture. It takes the form of decorative leaves or spikes inserted into tracery and linings, the center of which has the form of a three-lobed leaf. The simple shape of a shamrock can also be a symbol of the Trinity.
