The shamrock (from the Latin trifolium) appears in both pagan and Christian symbolism. The shamrock motif was popular in Gothic architecture. It takes the form of decorative leaves or spikes inserted into tracery and paneling, the center of which is in the form of a three-lobed leaf. The simple shape of the trefoil can also be a symbol of the Trinity.
