The shamrock is one of the national symbols of Ireland. It has the shape of a green clover trefoil. It is an attribute of Saint Patrick, who, according to legend, used a trio of leaves growing from a common stem as a representation of the Holy Trinity during his evangelization of Ireland. According to legend, Saint Patrick used the shamrock to explain the trinity of God to the Irish pagans. The three leaves are the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, and one stem symbolizes their common essence.
